Excel, Inc. was founded in Okolona, Mississippi in 1988 with the purpose of furthering education, promoting community building, encouraging community service and fostering healthy lives. From its beginning, Excel has been committed to racial, religious and economic inclusiveness at every level: leadership, planning and participation.

Excel Commons Family Community Center is the heart of Main Street in Okolona.  What began as a  summer youth program in three borrowed classrooms in 1988, has turned a former department store into the community hub. Children’s enrichment, senior wellness and GED certification classes are the core of Excel’s programs, while a community gym, computer lab and commons room are open to all in need. Excel Commons also includes a resale shop, coffee shop and Catholic Center. Some services are also offered at our other Mississippi  locations in Calhoun City and Morton.

One of a Kind

One of A Kind Resale Shop is located at 232 W. Main Street, Okolona.

In 1994, Excel opened a resale store to respond to the need for affordable clothing and household items. One of a Kind Resale offers economical clothing and household items.

The store is operated entirely by volunteers who donate their time to sort and display items, serve customers and do whatever else is needed. The Okolona community and people from around the county have been generous in donating items for resale in the store. Income from the store provides a source of funding for Excel’s learning programs.

New Opportunities for Adult Education

Excel Receives Computers to Help with New GED Testing Requirements
Beginning in January 2014 the new GED test will require not only additional academic skills but computer literacy as well.  Gone are the days of pencil and paper testing, replaced by the GED test being available by computer use only.  For our younger GED students this will not pose as much of a hardship as they have been around technology for most of their lives.  For our older population of GED students, computer testing presents an additional “bump in the road” on their way to acquiring a GED.

To assist in this additional requirement, the Excel GED Adult Education classroom received in December from an anonymous donor, ten laptop computers for classroom use in preparing for GED testing.  These computers will allow the student to enhance or develop keyboarding skills to make the necessary transition to computerized GED testing in January 2014.  Current and future Excel students appreciate this generous gift to our program.
